The role requires strong diagnostic capability, excellent communication, and the ability to stay
calm and solution-focused in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. OCC Engineers act as the
engineering subject-matter experts for the Control Centre, supporting decision-making, coaching
controllers on technical best practice, and liaising with garages, drivers and roadside teams.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES:
Incident Management & Technical Assessment
• Provide immediate technical assessment of on-road breakdowns, faults and vehicle
incidents using available data and systems.
• Utilise Geotab and Tranzaura to assess defect severity, vehicle condition, driver reports and
likely next steps, ensuring a safe and timely response.
• Determine the most effective response, remote reset, driver instruction, dispatching an
engineer, recovery, or allocating a replacement vehicle.
• Ensure risks are identified early and that safety remains the first priority in all decision making.
Control Centre Support & Collaboration
• Work closely with iBus Controllers to manage mechanical incidents, offering clear technical
advice and supporting prioritisation of resources.
• Act as the engineering expert within the Control Centre, helping controllers understand
vehicle symptoms, common faults and the operational impact of mechanical issues.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with drivers, offering concise instructions and
reassurance.
• Liaise with garage engineering teams and roadside engineers to coordinate responses and
ensure smooth handover of information.
Coaching, Training & Best Practice
• Coach controllers on best practice when managing mechanical defects, including:

• Recognising early-warning signs

• Communicating effectively with drivers
• Understanding safety-critical vs non-critical defects
• Determining appropriate escalation routes
• Support continuous improvement by identifying recurring faults, trends or training needs
across the operation.
• Share expert knowledge across all Go-Ahead London bus types, systems and common defect
patterns.
Quality, Compliance & Reporting
• Ensure all incident information, engineering data and system updates are recorded
accurately and in line with TfL and company requirements.
• Highlight repeat defects, vehicle trends or safety concerns to Engineering Management.
• Contribute to post-incident reviews, providing technical insight and recommendations to
improve reliability and reduce on-road failures.
Communication & Behaviour
• Maintain a calm, professional and composed demeanour during high-pressure situations.
• Communicate clearly and confidently with drivers, controllers, engineers and stakeholders
at all levels.
• Build strong working relationships across Engineering, Operations, Roadside Teams and the
Control Centre.
General Duties
• Stay current with emerging vehicle technologies, diagnostic tools and fleet changes.
• Carry out any other duties reasonably requested by the Operations Control Centre Manager
or Engineering leadership.
• Participate in relevant training and development to maintain technical excellence.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, CONDITIONS SPECIFICATION:
Essential
• Extensive engineering knowledge across all bus types in the Go-Ahead London fleet
(including hybrid and electric).
• Strong diagnostic skills and ability to interpret technical data remotely.
• Experience with Geotab, Tranzaura or similar telematics/inspection platforms.
• Excellent verbal communication and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Ability to work collaboratively with controllers and operations colleagues in a fast-paced
environment.
• NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds Level 3, or equivalent engineering qualification.
