Who are we

The          Our Payroll Controller: 

Is responsible for overseeing payroll operations, ensuring the timely and accurate processing of both the weekly and four-weekly payrolls. Reporting directly to the Payroll Manager, the role will provide leadership to the Payroll Team Leader and payroll administrators, ensuring payroll compliance, accuracy, and efficiency.

In addition to payroll processing, the Payroll Controller will oversee payroll systems management, reporting, time and attendance, bonus payments, and general payroll housekeeping. The role will also play a key part in process improvement and system optimisation to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Payroll Processing & Compliance
  • Oversee and ensure the accurate and timely delivery of weekly and four-weekly payrolls.
  • Conduct payroll checks and reconciliations, identifying and rectifying anomalies before payroll deadlines.
  • Ensure accurate processing of bonus payments, holiday entitlements, leavers, and adjustments.
  • Monitor compliance with statutory regulations and company policies, conducting payroll audits as needed.
  • Act as a key liaison between the Payroll Manager, Payroll Team Leader, payroll provider (GNE), and internal stakeholders.
  1. Payroll System & Data Management
  • Ensure general housekeeping of payroll systems, maintaining accurate and up-to-date payroll records.
  • Oversee Time & Attendance system management, ensuring accurate payroll data capture and reporting.
  • Maintain and improve payroll reporting, including holiday reporting, earnings analysis, and compliance reports.
  • Work with IT and payroll providers to enhance payroll system functionality and data integrity.

 

 

  1. Leadership & Support
  • Provide guidance and support to the Payroll Team Leader and payroll staff.
  • Ensure adequate payroll coverage, coordinating holiday and absence management for the payroll team.
  • Support the Payroll Manager with payroll audits, process reviews, and system improvements.
  • Act as a point of escalation for complex payroll queries and issues.
  1. Continuous Improvement & Reporting
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance payroll efficiency.
  • Develop and refine payroll reports and analytics, providing key insights to senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with audit requirements and data security policies.
  • Stay updated on legislative and regulatory payroll changes, advising the business on necessary adjustments.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

Proven experience in payroll operations and compliance within a large organisation.
 Strong understanding of weekly and four-weekly payroll cycles.
 Experience in payroll system management and reporting.
 Ability to lead and develop a team, supporting payroll staff and ensuring adequate coverage.
 Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
 Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, statutory payments, and deductions.
 High level of accuracy and attention to detail, ensuring payroll integrity.
 Proficiency in payroll software, Excel, and reporting tools.

Preferred:

 Experience working with GNE, OP9, DAS, and Time & Attendance systems.
 A recognised payroll qualification (e.g., CIPP) or equivalent experience.
 Knowledge of bonus payment structures and payroll reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations, following responsibilities outlined under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity when handling payroll data.
